Who We Are

Welcome to Troy Gardens, a unique development integrating people and nature in Madison, Wisconsin.

About Us

On 31-acres of urban property, Troy Gardens integrates mixed-income green-built housing, community gardens, an organic farm, and restored prairie and woodlands.

Community GroundWorks at Troy Gardens, in partnership with the Madison Area Community Land Trust and the Center for Resilient Cities, is dedicated to developing, managing and stewarding Troy Gardens.

Troy Gardens' environmental education programs include a nationally recognized leadership program for teenagers, an award-winning children’s garden, and an innovative partnership with the University of Wisconsin.

Neighbors care for 330 family garden plots in the community gardens. Volunteer Stewards restore and maintain native tall grass prairie and maple woodlands in the natural areas. Over 100 households pick up weekly bags of fresh organic vegetables from the community farm. Proud homeowners have recently purchased 30 green-built townhomes built around common courtyards.

Troy Gardens is open to the public and hosts an interpretive trail. Please visit, learn and enjoy!

Vision and Mission

Troy Gardens was born of a community vision for a unique parcel of state-owned surplus land. The Friends of Troy Gardens (now Community GroundWorks at Troy Gardens) was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 2001 and created what is now one of Madison, Wisconsin’s hidden treasures, and a place that many people call home.

We envision a world in which more people cultivate sustainable abundance in their communities.

Our mission is:

  • To nurture a meaningful relationship between people and the land,
  • To grow wholesome and organic food for local tables,
  • To regenerate urban natural areas,
  • To cultivate a diverse learning community,
  • To teach what we practice, and
  • To foster healthy communities and personal wellbeing.
