Internships

Internships are currently available in two Youth Grow Local programs: Kids' Gardening Program and East High Youth Farm.

Kids' Gardening Program

Interns will build their skills as environmental educators and gardeners as they work with youth from area community centers, elementary and high schools, and summer camps. Interns will assist the Kids' Gardening Coordinator in developing, implementing, and evaluating program activities for children in our award-winning organic Kids' Garden, tallgrass prairie, edible landscape, and sugar maple woodland. In addition, interns will gain valuable experience training and supervising volunteers and helping to maintain and improve the Kids' Garden and Outdoor Kitchen.

During the nine-week summer program, shifts are generally 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM Monday-Friday (although they may vary slightly depending on the schedules of our partnering organizations). During the five-week spring and eight-week fall programs, shifts are generally 2-5 PM, several days per week (the particular days are dependent on the schedules of our partnering organizations).

East High Youth Farm

Youth working in the garden. The East High Youth Farm is an inclusive, collaborative project that engages a diverse population of students in a hands-on science and vocational program focused on sustainable agriculture and service learning. Youth are actively involved in the entire process of running a small-scale organic urban farm, from raising seedlings in the East High greenhouse to harvesting produce at the East High Youth Farm and packing the food for delivery to the Goodman Community Center's Food Pantry.

Interns will work as part of field crew in all aspects of organic vegetable production: bed prep, planting, weeding, harvesting, and watering. In addition, interns will lead and supervise volunteer work crews of teens and adults in farm tasks and assist program coordinator with general program oversight and development activities including planning daily activities, program documentation and evaluation.

Schedule

During the nine-week summer program (June-August), shifts are generally three to four mornings per week Monday-Saturday (the particular days are dependent on the schedules of youth farmers and our partnering organizations). During the spring (April-May) and fall (Sept-Oct) programs, shifts are generally two to three afternoons per week (again, the particular days are dependent on the schedules of youth farmers and our partnering organizations).
