Natural Areas Restoration

Much of the Troy Gardens site is being restored to natural habitat. On 3.5 acres, we have planted a native prairie. A small maple woodland on the west edge of the site has been cleared of invasive, weedy species, and its edges planted with native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers.

In addition, there are ornamental plantings visitors can enjoy and learn from. Between the native prairie and the community gardens we have planted several demonstration gardens, including an edible garden featuring herbs of all kinds, a Hmong traditional medicinal and herb garden, and an ornamental prairie planting. To the west of the prairie an ornamental and edible landscape area allows visitors to walk through and graze as they enjoy the sights and smells of the vegetation.

Interact

Pick up a trail guide at the front of the site and follow the beautiful metal signs and numbered posts to learn more about what's happening in the natural areas and on other parts of the Troy land. Download a guide to the edible garden below to find out what's planted there.

Get Involved

Volunteers play a vital role in the management of our natural areas through their participation in land care and planting activities. The continued support we receive helps us to keep weedy invasive species in check, and facilitates the vital ecological role our natural areas play within this urban setting.
