Internship
At Troy Gardens
Internship
Application
The Friends of Troy Gardens (FTG) seeks
graduate or upper level undergraduate students to assist with agricultural
and natural areas restoration programs at Troy Gardens. We offer a limited
number of paid internships during the spring, summer, and fall sessions.
Introduction
The Friends of Troy Gardens (FTG) is a non-profit organization responsible
for the development, management, and stewardship of Troy Gardens, 26 acres
of open space on the Northside of Madison, Wisconsin. The land is being
developed for multi-purpose use including a large community garden, youth
gardens, handicapped accessible gardens, a community farm, woodland and
prairie restoration, nature trails, and edible landscaping. On five additional
acres adjacent to the open space area, the Madison Area Community Land
Trust is building 30 units of affordable housing at Troy Gardens. (For
more information about FTG see www.troygardens.org)
The Friends of Troy Gardens works in partnership with the University
of Wisconsin-Madison (specifically, the Center for Integrated Agricultural
Systems and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning) to support
sustainable agriculture education. Our partnership is able to offer a
limited number of student internships, classroom activities, and research
projects, through grants from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Evjue
Foundation.
To be considered for an internship, students must:
a) contact an FTG staff member and work collaboratively to develop an
internship project,
b) submit a short proposal (details below),
c) identify a faculty sponsor/advisor, who agrees to monitor the student's
progress toward meeting learning objectives.
d) participate in a "learning community retreat," with the Friends
of Troy Gardens board and staff, to discuss the projects. The 2006 retreat
will be scheduled sometime in the fall .
Each intern will receive a $1000 stipend for 150 hours. If materials
are needed for special projects, some supplemental funding can be requested.
Students can also arrange with their faculty sponsor to receive internship
credits.
