Volunteer in the Troy Natural Areas

The natural areas program organizes and trains volunteers to lead and assist with restoration and management activities. These Natural Areas Stewards participate in hands-on educational programs and work activities at Troy Gardens.

The natural areas program organizes and trains volunteers to lead and assist with restoration and management activities. These Natural Areas Stewards participate in hands-on educational programs and work activities at Troy Gardens. People who are interested in supporting our overall management efforts are invited to join any of our stewardship events—the most important ingredients for this work are energy, enthusiasm, and a passion for learning.

Ongoing hands-on workshops provide Troy Gardens Natural Areas Volunteer Stewards with:

• An introduction to ecological restoration principles and practices,
• Training in native woodland and prairie plant identification, including planting and management techniques,
• An opportunity to share your knowledge and enthusiasm with other like-minded individuals dedicated to preserving Madison's urban natural areas, and
• The satisfaction to see the result of your efforts in action!

Workshop topics can vary from year to year, but typically include:

• Tree identification
• Tree pruning
• Invasive species identification and removal
• Native species and spring ephemeral restoration
• Prescribed burning
• Prairie plant identification and maintenance
• Herb and edibles plant identification, planting and maintenance
• Bird identification

The season for Natural Areas Stewards runs from March through October.
